You are unemployed or incapacitated for work

If you have become unemployed, you will not accrue any more pension benefits at StiPP through your employer. Your membership of the pension fund stops automatically if your employer does not provide StiPP with any pay details for you for three months. By then we assume that you are no longer working for this employer. Yet there are ways to continue accruing pension benefits, even if you become unemployed or incapacitated for work.

  • You will no longer be entitled to any partner’s pension under life cover. As long as you have unemployment benefit, you still have this entitlement.
  • If you become incapacitated for work, and you are no longer employed by your employer, your employer will no longer pay your pension contribution for you either. You will not then accrue any more pension benefits.

What happens to your pension?

Commutate pension

If your pension is less than €592.51 (2024) gross per year and you have a new employer and accrue pension benefits through it, StiPP will automatically transfer your pension to your new pension fund. If you do not have a new employer after five years or you reach retirement age [state pension (AOW) age],you will receive a pension commutation offer from us.

This means you can choose to have your pension paid out early as a lump sum. You will not then receive any monthly pension benefit from StiPP when you subsequently retire. We will only cash in your pension with your agreement.

TO DO

Back to work outside the sector

If you are going to start accruing pension benefits again, StiPP will transfer a small pension with a maximum amount of €592.51 gross per year to your new pension provider. This is known as the transfer of accrued benefits and happens automatically 11 months after the date on which you left employment. Both StiPP and your new pension provider will automatically inform you. Then you can continue accruing your pension benefits in your new job.

If you have accrued a pension capital of more than €592.51 gross per year, you can apply to your new pension provider yourself for the transfer of accrued benefits.

If your accrued pension benefits are less than €2 gross per year, your pension will lapse. This is laid down by law.

TO DO

Voluntary continuation

In some cases you can continue your accrual of pension benefits at StiPP at your own expense. If you are interested in voluntary continuation, you can apply for it from us within nine months of the termination of your employment.

Please note: you will then have to pay the pension contribution yourself.
