Your pension and tax

You will receive your pension payment from StiPP each month. This is your gross pension. You pay tax on it. The amount you eventually receive in your bank account is your net pension. This is the amount you can spend.

StiPP automatically deducts the following taxes from your gross pension:

  • Income tax and national insurance contributions
  • Healthcare Insurance Act contribution

StiPP only applies the income tax and national insurance contributions credit if you have applied for it yourself.

Annual statement for tax return

You will receive an annual statement from StiPP showing:

  • a breakdown of your pension payments
  • all the details you need for your tax return

Dependant's pension?

On your retirement date you will have decided whether or not to include dependant's pension. The choice you made on your retirement date is fixed. You cannot change it.

  • Did you decide to include dependant's pension?
Your partner and children below the age of 25 will receive a dependant's pension if you die.

  • Did you decide not to include dependant's pension?
Your pension will stop when you die. Any dependants you have will not then receive any pension.

Who does StiPP consider to be your partner?

You were accruing pension benefits in the Basic Plan (end date 1 January 2026) and

  • you are married
  • you have a registered partnership

You were accruing pension benefits in the Plus Plan (end date 1 January 2026) and

  • you are married
  • you have a registered partnership
  • you are officially cohabiting and at the time you retire you have been living with your partner at the same address for a minimum of six months

You were accruing pension benefits in the StiPP Pension Plan (start date 1 January 2026) and

  • you are married
  • you have a registered partnership
  • you are officially cohabiting and at the time you retire you have been living with your partner at the same address for a minimum of six months
  • you cohabit and share a joint household and at the time you retire you have been living with your partner at the same address for a minimum of six months

What if prices rise?

StiPP pays a variable pension with less investments risk. Therefore the amount of pension can change each year. If prices rise, you can buy less with this amount. This is called inflation. StiPP cannot guarantee whether your pension will increase by the inflation rates. In poor times, StiPP could decrease your pension.
